Applications of Seed Therapy and Su Jok Therapy
Applications of Seed Therapy and Su Jok Therapy Seed Therapy deals with the application of seeds or other parts of plants and attaching it with a tape at a corresponding point in the hand or foot of a person feeling pain. Seed Therapy is based on Sujok Therapy, when broken down, means Su = handà and Jok = foot. These Korean words rely solely on a therapy that makes use of the hands and feet as areas of treatment for the whole body (see Figure 1). Professor Park Jae Wooà was a Korean scientist and philosopher who originated and developed this therapy (Richmond, 2006). He urbanized anà assortment of successful systems of treatment which have expanded all over the world, including physicians,à practitioners and ordinary people alike. Su Jok therapy is indeed an instantaneous and effective healing therapy requiring no medication and is entirely safe without any accompanying side effects (Richmond, 2006). Among countless illnesses, Su Jok helps in curing many diseases such as: Arthritis, bronchitis, asthma, backache, joints pain, migraine, hypertension, sinusitis, deafness, constipation, acidity, obesity, diabetes, menstrual problems, and many more chronic diseases related to different organs of our body (Woo, 2009). Su Jok therapy cures and prevents diseases at a physical, mental, and emotional level using hands and feet as treatment areas. This therapy is regarded as a healing system whereby simple stimulation to the specific corresponding points on the hands and feet, most popularly used is the Su Jok probe, would be applied on and around this area in order to seek the most painful spots confirmed by the client. Healing is reported in 94% of five hundred and thirty subjects according to Woo (2009). Seed Therapy is considered harmonious to Su Jok Therapy and utilizes the energy of specific seeds. Since seeds are regarded as natural stimulators, they are able to cause the body part to respond. The objective of this paper is to discuss and review the effects of Seed Therapy in relieving pain and alleviating illnesses. Seed Therapy is one of the important natural stimulator therapies. This precise acupressure phenomenon is the reason why Seed Therapy is regarded as a major treatment pertaining to Su Jok Therapy. Post acupressure treatment, patients are encouraged to tie or adhere seeds using adhesive plaster on the painful points. The pulsations of the seeds deliver further energy to accelerate the progression of expedited healing when in direct contact to the treated point. Seed therapy is effective against chronic diseases and certain pains; especially joint pains. The seeds could be either placed singly over the effected area or may cover the entire painful section (Devitt, 2009). Seeds and Their Effects When implementing Seed Therapy, any seed may be used; each seed brings its proper cure effect (see Table 1). The most important factor for treatment is the shape of the seeds or beans being used. The shape of the seed is the indicator to which body part the seed will do optimal advantage (Umbra, 2007). For example cranberry, cowberry and lentil seeds offer support to cough, cold, and flu. Moreover, mound and spherical shaped seeds of pea, cherry, and black pepper are known to offer relief to disorders related to eyes, breasts, the head, knee joints, and back problems. Kidney-shaped red beans are used to treat kidney and stomach related disorders. The elongated forms of seeds are used to resolve problems in the limbs, lips, nose and intestines. The walnut seed is enforced as a cure to cerebral disorders, while peach shaped seeds of millet are used to treat urinary tract and gall bladder problems (Umbra, 2007). Green pea seeds are used to treat various heart conditions, whereas cumin a nd pumpkin seeds help alleviate gastric irritation and constipation. Also grape seeds are effective in cases of diabetes and pancreatic problems, as well as flaccidity in the urinary bladder muscles. Arrow wood seeds are novel seeds that are being widely used for the relief of hypertension. Rice is used to relief swelling, redness, bronchial problems and loss of sensation in fingers and toes. Flax seeds aids in eliminating toxic body fluids that assist in inflammatory diseases while buckwheat seeds treat pain and chronic inflammation in the shoulder, tooth, head, throat, eyes and tonsils (Umbra, 2007). Table 1. This table briefly displays the types of seeds used depending on the symptom or area of complaint. Cranberry, Cowberry, Lentil Cough, Cold, Flu Pea, Cherry, Black Pepper Eyes, Breast, Head, Knees, Back Kidney beans Kidneys, Stomach Elongated shaped Limbs, Lips, Nose, Intestines Walnut Cerebral disorders Millet Urinary tract, Gall bladder Green pea Heart conditions Cumin, Pumpkin Gastric irritation, Constipation Grape Seed Diabetes, Pancreatic problems, Urinary bladder muscles Arrow wood Hypertension Rice Swelling, Redness, Bronchial problems, Loss of sensation fingers/toes Flax Eliminating toxic fluids Buckwheat Chronic inflammation, Throat, Tooth, Shoulder, Head, eyes, Tonsils Treating Special Populations; Children/Elders Auricular -relating to the ear and hearing- Seed Therapy is also referred to as the seed-pressure method (Steinflow, 2010). It corresponds to applying a hard and smooth seed, herb, or a magnetic pellet on a tape to a detected auricular point and pressing it properly so as to stimulate the point to treat diseases. Auricular seed therapy, a popular therapy for the past 40 years, came into being on the basis of Su Jok Seed Therapy. Through clinical practice it has been confirmed that auricular seed therapy may also be indicated for many diseases and achieve significant therapeutic effects (Steinflow, 2010). This method, due to its simple application, constant stimulation, and safety is regarded more suitable for the elders; the weak, children and those who are very afraid of pain, or cannot receive treatment everyday (Steinflow, 2010). Treatment of Allergies The main points for the treatment of allergy include allergic area, endocrine, adrenal gland and ear apex bleeding. The Allergy Area is the specific point for diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases (Steinflow, 2010). It is used to improve the immunological functions of the entire body. Allergic diseases result from the combination of Anaphylactogen and Anaphylactic antibody, which may disturb the normal metabolism in cells and lead to dilation of capillaries, capillary hyper permeability, and spasms of the smooth muscles. The points in the endocrine and adrenal glands are used to increase the secretion of various hormones, such as adrenal-cortical hormone (ACTH). This prevents the release of histamine and inhibits the antigen-antibody reaction in mucous membrane and skin. Prevention of antibody formation also reduces exudates from capillaries (Steinflow, 2010) Seed Therapy Uses in Cancer Other benefits of seed therapy involve prostate cancer (Vatkarma, 2008). One man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only one man in 30 will die of this disease. While there are several treatment options, including surgery, many doctors choose prostate seed therapy because of its ability to treat cancer without affecting surrounding healthy tissue, helping to minimize the risk of impotence or incontinence. Though the technique is somewhat new, preliminary data show that 90 percent of patients treated with prostate seed therapy remain cancer free after five years (Vatkarma, 2008). Prostate seed implantation, also called interstitial radiation and brachytherapy, involves a surgical procedure to implant up to 130 low-dose radioactive seeds into the prostate through 30 to 40 long, slender needles. The procedure takes less than two hours and patients return home the same day, resuming normal activity in three to 14 days. The seeds continue delivering rad iation for several weeks and remain in place permanently (Vatkarma, 2008). An alternative Seed Therapy following breast cancer surgery may reduce treatment time and concentrates radiation where it is most needed (Geraldini, 2010). The MammoSite Radiation Therapy System contributes brachytherapy to females who have received a lumpectomy, or a tumor that is removed from the breast. Instead of the usual high energy radiation that enters from the surface of the breast inwards, brachytherapy acts from inwards out. After a patient recovers from her breast cancer surgery, a radiation oncologist threads a catheter through the skin until it reaches the cavity left by the tumor, usually about 2 or 3 centimeters wide. A balloon on the catheters tip inflates with liquid within the cavity, and a tiny bit of radioactive material is placed within the balloon. The patient then goes home (Geraldini, 2010). Four or five days later, patients return to the clinic, where the radiation oncology team removes the catheter and radiation source, ending the treatment. Because the rad iation source is so tiny, there is no risk of radiation exposure to family members or friends at home during therapy. When the seed is placed in the MammoSite balloon, the seed emits X-rays in all directions-much like light emanates from the sun. The dose of radiation is most highly concentrated right at the edge of the tissue cavity, but declines further away from the radioactive seed. Within tissue that lies one centimeter away from the edge of the tissue cavity, for example, the dose of radiation already has shrunk by half, and it keeps getting lower and lower the further away the tissue is from the site of the former tumor (Vatkarma, 2008)(Geraldini, 2010). Instead of the five-to-seven weeks worth of daily office visits required for external radiation treatments, patients receiving MammoSite can complete radiation after only four or five days of therapy, making it time efficient and cost effective. Due to the fact that the radiation source is placed at the site of the patients tumor, the rays reach the very tissues surrounding the tumor where cancer is most likely to return. With MammoSites, the source can enter the breast so quickly where minimal radiation is witnessed to the rest of the breast. The benefit with this fact is that radiation is focused mainly on the area most at risk, which is the local area around the tumor (Geraldini, 2010). Two recent studies followed 200 women for five years suggest that brachytherapy is as effective as external beam radiation in preventing breast cancer from coming back in women who have had a lumpectomy. This said, the effectiveness of Seed Therapy Su Jok Therapy in essence is a beyond promising treatment for such an invasive disease as cancer. Patients will not only be cured, yet, will be able to live better, productive lives without pain and suffering (Vatkarma, 2008). In conclusion, unconventional treatments are overshadowed by the recognition and universal acceptance of Seed Therapy. In fact, various numbers of patients, whether cancer patients or arthritis sufferers, are turning towards Seed Therapy as an alternative for traditional medicine (Lachmi, 2007). In India, where there is an abundance of Su Jok Therapists, physicians are estimated to see and treat a maximum of 300 patients per day; most of whom have traveled long distances seeking a miracle as their last hope of treatment (Lachmi, 2007) There, the novel therapies of Sujok and Seeds are indeed the future of contemporary medicine that can be extremely promising in the treatment of minor to severe ailments afflicting a vast number of patients worldwide. A Teacher with an Expertise in Teaching Essay -- philosophy of educatio
Expertise in Teaching When asked to name the teachers who have had the greatest positive impact on us, we tend to name those who were warm, energetic, enthusiastic, organized, impartial, and competent in their field. Expert teachers employ all of these traits, and, as the text states, are "experienced" and "effective" and have "developed solutions for common classroom problems" (Woolfolk, 2001). I chose to interview my fourth grade teacher, Mr. Mendez, because he not only demonstrates expertise in teaching, but also has created a fun and proactive learning environment, which I hope to emulate in my future classroom. In order to teach effectively, the teacher must have a strong knowledge base of the material (Woolfolk, 2001). Mr. Mendez feels confident teaching all areas of the curriculum. A teacher who does not feel comfortable in his or her ability presenting a certain aspect of the material would most likely have difficulty relating the material to children. Specializing in a subject is not only important for advanced knowledge base, but for practicality as well. Mr. Mendez noted that having different teachers specializing (and teaching) in different areas of the curriculum saves time in lesson planning: students visit another classroom for science, for example. This arrangement also offers him an opportunity to meet with other students. Expert teachers are also instrumental in motivating all students to learn (Woolfolk, 2001). When a student lacks motivation to learn or do work, these experts scout out ways to encourage learning. Mr. Mendez holds his fourth grade students accountable for getting their work in and in on time. The students are given choices as to whether to redo homework for a better grade, thus grantin... ... such abilities. Analyzing Mr. Mendez's comments, I have come to the conclusion that expertise in teaching develops after some time and practice, but is mainly a product of patience, and an understanding of children. Expert teachers are aware of how each individual learns, and is attune to every unique learning style. Preparation is key to establishing teacher quality (Woolfolk, 2001). Expertise in teaching is not a terminal state: methods and styles must continuously be altered to accommodate for each new influx of students. Thus, expert teachers are flexible. However, teachers can develop their expertise by listening to students, offering feedback, noticing effective individual learning styles, and understanding the ways in which each student is unique and special. Australia In The Vietnam War :: essays research papers
The only time Australia has come under direct attack from another country, was when Japan bombed Darwin and sunk a number of ships in Sydney, during World War 2. The question then has to be asked, why Australia has been involved in so many conflicts. A number of recent conflicts in this century come to mind, they include, The Boer War, World War One, World War Two and The Vietnam War. By far the conflict that drew the most outrage from Australian citizens was the Vietnam War. Australia has been drawn into these conflicts through a number of treaties and alliances made with other countries. Often it is not the conflicts that have drawn most outrage from Australian citizens, rather the insistence of other countries, for Australia to accept large numbers of post-war refugees. The introduction of conscription into Australia during the Vietnam War, caused much outrage in the Australian public. Vietnam was the first war ever to be properly televised, the public saw for the first time the true brutality of war. The public started to question Australia’s involvement in the war. Moratoriums were held around Australia in protest against conscription and Australia’s involvement in the war. Much of the protesting was done by students and the younger generations, there was still support for the war effort. This was reflected in the November 1966 elections, when there was a landslide victory for the Liberals. Conscription did have an effect on the Liberal governments popularity, a few months after a complete troop withdrawal in 1972 from Vietnam, the Whitlam Labour government replaced the McMahon Liberal government. Historically, one of the influencing factors of the Liberal’s election loss was the Governments choice to get involved in a war that h ad little to do with Australia. Australia’s involvement in Vietnam came about due to the South-East Asia Treaty Organisation(SEATO). Australia was a country involved in SEATO. After Americas request, South Vietnam requested Australia’s help in the Vietnam Conflict. Australia’s involvement in this organisation was an important one, if South-East Asia fell to communism, then it’s northern shores would be vulnerable. Having said this, Australia’s involvement in this conflict was not purely for this reason. Political ambition was a major contributing factor in Australia’s involvement. After all, it was a chance to help one of the most powerful countries in the world out, and this would strengthen Australia’s political alliances with America.

Effects of Routing on Current Communication Essay
When it comes to Johnson Companyââ¬â¢s current communication methods it is blatantly obvious that they are very outdated. I would start by updating their phone system to a digital multiline phone system which utilizes the latest network telephony protocols including VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). There are many vendors who offer multiline digital telephones which would be very useful in bringing the Johnson Company up to speed with their competitors. Another significant improvement would be to augment their advertising in the phone book with a well-designed website. With the explosive growth in the popularity of e-commerce over the last decade the Johnson Company could greatly improve their visibility to potential new customers. If the website could be built by properly trained professionals it would make the Johnson Company stand out from other businesses which in turn would help to draw in more customers. It would be in the companyââ¬â¢s best interest to design and buil d a database which would be used to record order information. This would be useful in keeping track of existing customers and taking new orders from customers their information could be added to the database. Many companies do this and it is referred to as data mining. Simply put it helps keep track of what products and services they are buying in order to tailor products and services to their specific preferences. From a customer service standpoint it makes the customer feel like the company is going that extra mile to provide them with better products and services. When it comes to keeping existing customers informed of news and updates I would recommend the use of e-mail subscriptions. Most of todayââ¬â¢s businesses are using this method and are seeing positive results. Sending e-newsletters and updates would keep customers informed of the latest products and services available to them from the Johnson Company. Just make sure to give customers the option to unsubscribe due to the fact that notà all of Johnsonââ¬â¢s customers will want newsletters and updates sent to their e-mail accounts. All of the above recommendations should be helpful with regards to bringing Johnson up to speed with the rest of the modern business world. It would al so make their business more visible to new customers while improving business with existing customers. An additional effect of these updates will be an increase in profitability as a result of the higher visibility which would attract a vastly greater number of potential customers.

Social Changes Outside Philippines During 19th Century in the Light of Rizal’s Life
The World in Rizalââ¬â¢s Time Political Changes Alferez, Alain Jared Aquino, Angelica Atienza, Aldrin Baluyot, Rencie Bernabe, Venzerie Rose Lomibao, Justine 2CA1 1801 The Act of Union, a legislative agreement which united Ireland and Great Britain (England and Scotland) was enacted on January 1, 1801. On 1798, the Irish Rebellion brought the Irish question to the attention of the British Cabinet, and British Prime Minister, William Pitt, was convinced that the best solution was a union. The 1799 proposal met strong opposition from a number of members and was rejected by majority of the Irish parliament. However, the government pursued in changing the oppositionââ¬â¢s view. During the 1800 session of the parliament, the Act of Union was finally passed. In relation to Rizal Rizal crafted a large number of writings that changed many lives of people not only in the Philippines but also in many parts of the world. And one of Rizalââ¬â¢s greatest works, published on the early time of Spanish colonization of the Philippines, is his annotation of Antonio Morgaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Successo de las Islas Filipinasâ⬠. Dr. Jose Rizal reprinted in Paris Morgaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Successo de las Islas Filipinasâ⬠with his annotation. It described the history of the Philippines before the Spanish period. Rizal had shown through this work of his that the Filipinos had a civilization worthy to be proud of even long before the Spaniards came the country. 1816 The American Colonization Society was created in an effort to resettle blacks and newly freed slaves. What is ACS? What does it do? Why is it created? What was the issue with the blacks and slaves? Where? When? Who? How? Theà American Colonization Societyà (in full, The Society for the Colonization of Free People of Color of America), founded in 1816, was the primary vehicle to support the ââ¬Å"returnâ⬠of freeà African Americansà to what was considered greater freedom inà Africa. It helped to found theà colonyà ofà Liberiaà in 1821ââ¬â22 as a place for freedmen. Its founders wereà Henry Clay,à John Randolph, andà Richard Bland Lee. The colonization effort resulted from a mixture of motives. Free blacks,à freedmenà and their descendants, encountered widespread discrimination in the United States of the early 19th century. In relation to Rizal Rizal evidently disliked the discrimination of rights between black and white. What event? When? Where? How did he show his opposition to discrimination? Any writings? What did he do for the blacks and the slaves? 1837 Queen Victoria becomes Queen at the age of 18. Britain managed to build a huge empire during the Victorian period. It was also a time of tremendous change in the lives of British people. In 1837, most people lived in villages and worked on the land, by 1901, most lived in towns and worked in officers, shops, and factories. In relation to Rizal Rizal arrived in London and in Liverpool on May 24, 1888. For a short time, he stayed as a guest of Dr. Antonio Regidor, an exile and a practising lawyer. By the end of May, he transferred to a new boarding house ran by the Breckett Family. It was here that Rizal met Gertrude Breckett, a true-blooded English woman. Her case with Rizal was quite different from others because it was one-way. She showed sign of being very much in love with our hero. 1861 Criminal Law Coordination Act reduced the number of capital crimes to four: Murder, High Treason, Arson and Piracy. After 1861 capital punishment was only retained for 4 crimes, murder, piracy, arson in the Royal Dockyards and high treason In which country? England, Britain Why was CLCA reduced into four capital crimes? Why were they chosen? More details. In relation to Rizal Rizal was accused of Treason. (Accused as leader of Katipunan/ rebellion) Meaning of Treason betrayal of one's own country by waging war against it or by consciously or purposely acting to aid its enemies. Why was Rizal guilty with treason? What did he do? When? Where? His writings had helped inspire the Philippine Revolutionà against colonial rule. For 4 years Rizal remained in exile in Dapitan, where he practiced ophthalmology, built a school and waterworks, planned town improvements, wrote, and carried out scientific experiments. Then he successfully petitioned the Spanish government to join the Spanish army in Cuba as a surgeon; but on his way to Spain to enlist, the Philippine revolution broke out, and Rizal was returned from Spain, imprisoned, and tried for false charges of treason and complicity with the revolution. Connect to Rizalââ¬â¢s martyrdom. His enemies in the government and Church were operating behind the scenes, and he was convicted. The day before he was executed he wrote to a friend: ââ¬Å"I am innocent of the crime of rebellion. So I am going to die with a tranquil conscience. â⬠1868 Queen Isabella was dethroned and replaced by Miguel Carlos dela Torre In relation to Rizal This happened in Spain (Conservatives wanted a queen as monarch) Why would the queen be dethroned by the general? In relation to Rizal Miguel Carlos dela Torre gave way to Liberalism and freedom of speech. Element in Spanish societyââ¬â liberals, reformists (dela Torre) created a Republic Separated state from church. Elected, not appointed. 1869 Suez Canal was opened to the world after 10 years of construction. With collaboration with the French How much time does Suez Canal save? (saved time and effort, goods are transported) (Pwede ata ito sa relation) Everything was transported including IDEAS wherever people go. Ideas from Europe will enter Philippines because of Suez Canal In relation to Rizal Rizal passed through the Suez Canal when he was on his way to the City of Naples. 1874 Former Spanish General Manuel Pavia y Rodriguez dies at Madrid, January 4 at age 67, having ended Spainââ¬â¢s first republic by his coup dââ¬â¢etat of January 1874. More details In relation to Rizal From Barcelona, Rizal moved to Madrid, the capital city of Spain. On November 3, 1882, he enrolled in Medicine and Philosophy and Letters in the Universidad Central de Madrid. He also studies painting and sculpture in the Academy of Arts and took lessons in French, German and English. http://www. capitalpunishmentuk. org/hanging1. html http://legal-dictionary. thefreedictionary. com/treason http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/American_Colonization_Society

Awakening: the Role Model
In Kate Chopinââ¬â¢s The Awakening, Edna Pontellier continuously struggles with breaking the social norms that are imposed upon her by the people around her including her own friends and husband. Throughout the novel, Edna is able to detach herself from the lifestyle that society appoints her by emulating Mademoiselle Reisz, an independent woman who has lived her life without conforming to society. Mademoiselle Reisz is not only a model for Ednaââ¬â¢s awakening, but she also represents the freedom and individuality that Enda wishes she could attain.Through imitating Reisz, Enda realizes the woman she is capable of becoming, but later learns that she cannot truly be an independent woman because of her differences from Mademoiselle Reisz. The relationship between Edna and Reisz is constructed on the artistic connection between the two characterââ¬â¢s. Enda, a painter, is very fond of Reiszââ¬â¢s musical talent. Edna specifically likes one of Reiszââ¬â¢s songs that she ca lls ââ¬Å"solitude. â⬠Chopin writes, ââ¬Å"The name of the piece was something else, but she called it ââ¬ËSolitude. When she heard it there came before her imagination the figure of a man standing beside a desolate rock on the seashore. He was naked. His attitude was one of hopeless resignation as he looked toward a distant bird winging its flight away from himâ⬠(38). This is what the relationship between Edna and Reisz is built on. Not only is it the artistic connection, but it is also the desire to be an individual that brings the two together. The song portrays an almost a vivid painting in the mind of Enda, the form of art that she enjoys. This particularly touches her because even though it is a different form of art, Edna still is able to understand and interpret it. In her mind, Reiszââ¬â¢s song leaves her with the sensation of being alone and free, a feeling that Edna longs to have for herself. The sea, which resembles freedom and knowledge throughout the novel is placed as an obstacle for the man who can only look at the bird that can go the other way and fly over the water. The ââ¬Å"resignationâ⬠that the man and Edna feel are both in response to the way that they cannot free themselves completely from the land they are on, which can be understood as society itself, unlike the bird that they have to watch simply fly the other way. From this interaction between the two, it is apparent that Ednaââ¬â¢s relationship with Mademoiselle Reisz is based on the two understanding each other through them both being artists. Alongside of their artistic connection, Edna Pontellier looks up to Mademoiselle Reisz as the woman she aspires to be.Enda wants to be an independent artist that is a maverick among the conventional people in the society just like Reisz is. This is evident in how the two characters interact. Chopin writes, ââ¬Å"When Mademoiselle Reisz came and touched her upon the shoulder and spoke to her, the woman seemed to e cho the thought which was ever in Ednaââ¬â¢s mind; or, better, the feeling which constantly possessed herâ⬠(69). Edna is figuratively and literally touched by Reisz in this moment. Edna wishes to be free and give up the all of the responsibilities she has a a woman. She does not want to be in the ââ¬Å"habitâ⬠of doing all the social responsibilities that are placed upon women. Reisz echoes the freedom that Edna wishes she had by touching her and almost giving her that independence she yearns for. We can see how Edna struggles on the inside with wanting to be free and independent from how the narrator refers to it as a ââ¬Å"feeling which constantly possessed her. â⬠The possession shows how Edna does not have control over this feeling and she will always want to be a free individual.Reisz communicates to Edna that it is possible break the social standards by touching her and telling her that it is possible to be different because Reisz has done it herself. The c onnection between the two in this passage is one that is very much one that is mutual and close. Mademoiselle Reisz provides Edna with enlightenment that ââ¬Å"possesse[s] her,â⬠while Edna gives ââ¬Å"the most disagreeable and unpopular womanâ⬠a true friendship in a society that is bias against independent women who defy the social convention. Reisz once again touches Edna similarly to how she had earlier on in the novel.Chopin writes, ââ¬Å"She put her arms around me and felt my shoulder blades, to see if my wings were strong, she said. ââ¬ËThe bird that would soar above the level plain of tradition and prejudice must have strong wings. It is a sad spectacle to see the weaklings bruised, exhausted, fluttering back to earthâ⬠(p. 127). Similar to the man from the song that wishes that he had wings like the bird to be free. Ednaââ¬â¢s wings that she can use overcome the tradition and prejudice of society are being checked by Mademoiselle Reisz to see if she is strong enough to fly on her own. In addition, Edna s reached out to by Reisz and is comforted by her knowledge on how to be an individual. Edna wants to be free and is happy to relieved by the fact that Reisz is there to help her. Although Reisz is there to help Edna, Reisz also does think it is a shame if Edna were to fail in obtaining her independence. Mademoiselle Reisz calls it a spectacle which makes those who fail look ridiculous or like a fool. She is also telling Edna if she doesnââ¬â¢t succeed that she will make herself a spectacle that the entire tradition on the ground, society, is going to see her fall as she makes herself look like a fool.We can also see that Edna does enjoy the presence of Resiz although it may be hard on her at times. Chopin writes, ââ¬Å"There was nothing which so quieted the turmoil of Ednaââ¬â¢s senses as visit to Mademoiselle Reisz. It was then, in the presence of that personality which was offensive to her, that the woman, by her divine art, seemed to reach Ednaââ¬â¢s spirit and set it freeâ⬠(p. 120). At this point, Edna Pontellier feels as if the personality of Reisz, which she seems to envy because of its complete freedom, is the only thing that ââ¬Å"reach[es] Ednaââ¬â¢s spirit and set[s] it free. Ednaââ¬â¢s world that is filled with struggle to be independent can only be calmed by the presence of her role model and deity, Mademoiselle Reisz. Since the relationship between Edna and Reisz is clearly one based on being independent women in a society that is prejudice against those whom that contravene the societal laws, the Ednaââ¬â¢s life and suicide can be understood with more lucidity. Ednaââ¬â¢s life through the novel is incontrovertibly a mimic of the life of Mademoiselle Reisz. Since Reisz is the independent and free woman Edna strives to be, Edna simply follows all the things that Reisz does.Edna returns back to painting{what does she want from painting}, she no longer ââ¬Å"go[es] t hrough the daily treadmill of the life which has been portioned out to us,ââ¬â¢ and she no longer letââ¬â¢s society command her what to do. Even though Edna is a free and independent woman by following the lifestyle of her counterpart, Mademoiselle Reisz, Edna struggles to be completely free. She still has to deal with the return of her husband and most importantly living with her children. This struggle makes the seemingly independent woman, Edna, ultimately commit suicide.Although Edna is fulfilled by her ability to initially take flight, gain freedom, Edna is just like ââ¬Å"weaklings bruised, exhausted, fluttering back to earthâ⬠(p. 127). Because Ednaââ¬â¢s wings are weak she is unable to fly and be free. This is because of the burden on her placed by her family. With Robertââ¬â¢s return, Edna again begins to feel the societal pressures that were absent while Robert was in Mexico. Edna is pressured into falling backing into ââ¬Å"the daily treadmill of lifeâ ⬠because of her husband. This is one reason that she deicides to discontinue her life.Unlike Mademoiselle Reisz, Edna has a spouse whereas Reisz does not have a spouse that pressures her into conforming to society. Therefore Ednaââ¬â¢s independence is challenged in her own home unlike Reisz whom is free to do as she wishes. Alongside of not having a spouse, Reisz does not have to worry about children dissimilar to Edna. This is key in understanding Ednaââ¬â¢s suicide because of the extent to which he children were a major component in her deciding to give up her life. Reisz does not have to worry about children so she is much more capable of being a free woman. On the other hand, Edna has to take care of her children. This makes a major difference for Edna because her children will most likely be affected by societyââ¬â¢s thoughts and opinions on their mother. Her children, the only people who should be able to love her unconditionally, will have to ultimately ostracize their mother if she was to be an independent woman. Edna also gives her life because she does not want to burden her own offspring with societyââ¬â¢s judgement and beliefs of their own mother. In conclusion, Edna is weak considering that she is unable to remain an independent women and that she decides to end her life instead of taking power over her life.By submitting to death, Edna loses to society and ends her life for the interest of her children. Because she conforms in the end to what society wants her to do, take care of her children, Ednaââ¬â¢s death can be considered as a defeat. Mademoiselle Ratignolle, the prime example of someone that conforms to society expectations and beliefs, says that women should give their lives for their children. Edna does exactly that and therefore is not only weak, but dies as a woman with no independence or freedom.

Pacific Grove
Question 1: Based on the companyââ¬â¢s forecasted financial statements, can the company quickly comply with the banks requirements? It depends on what you consider quickly. If the deadline is to only to have a plan ready by June 30th, 2012 then it looks like they can come pretty close without implementing any major changes. Just by following their expected future growth plans they will almost reach the requirements of the bank within 4 years. Using the information provided from their forecasted financials, by 2015 Pacific Grove will reach a 55% ratio of interest/bearing debt to total assets and their equity multiplier will be 2. 7. (See Exhibit 1) Depending on how stringent the bank is this may not be quick enough of a timeline or progressive enough of a plan. If they want these figures lowered to the required levels by 2012 then Pacific Grove must do something more aggressive reduce interest bearing debt levels. The company should explore ways to reduce its need for working capit al financing. They should see if there are ways of improving their supply chain efficiency and forecasting so that they can reduce their inventory levels. They should look to negotiate with suppliers to reduce the rate they are paying for inventory. Pacific Grove should also see if they can extend the length of their accounts payable. Even if they have to pay a slight price premium, if the rate(APR) is less than what the banks are charging them in interest, it could help to both save money and reduce their capital needs. They should also see if they can adjust the credit policy terms with their customers to shorten the number of days before payment.By reducing receivables and increasing payables they should be able to reduce their financing needs from the bank in notes payable and thus lower their interest-bearing debt. It is unlikely that even with changes in working capital structure they will be able to reduce their debt within a year. Raising funds by selling common stock to pay- off some of their interest bearing debt may be necessary in order to quickly comply with the banks requirements. My suggestion however would be to acquire the other company which has better debt structure. When the two companies are financial are combined Pacific Groves ratios will be under those required by the bank. Exhibit 1: 2. Should the new television program be produced and sponsored by Pacific Grove Spice? If yes how the necessary investment should be financed? I would say no. At first glance the new investment looks good. The upside of the investment is that it would increase the companyââ¬â¢s sales, profits, and cash flow above their currently expected levels. Despite this upside it also significantly increases the yearly net working capital investment. The additional funds needed to pay for additional working capital means that the project has negative cash flow for both year 0 and year 1. Pacific Grove would really need to borrow or raise a total $2,573,118 to initially start and fund the venture before positive project cash flows start. If we are only looking at the financial implications of investing in the company using the expected IRR and NPV we may be fooled into thinking this new television program would be a great investment. Even if our WACC were 20%, we can expect the NPV of the project to be $1,716,414.When we look at discounted payback, however, we see that at a WACC of 20% the project payback period would be a little over 4 years and even the simple payback period is 3 years (see exhibit 2). This demonstrates that there is significant risk that the project investments may not be paid off, especially if actual performance is worse than expected. The most important issue currently facing the company is to reduce its interesting bearing debt so that it can continue to receive financing from the bank to support operations and growth.Investing in a project with a payback period of 3 years or longer would not be a wise decision as it would initially raise the level of interest bearing debt unless funded through the selling of equity. Although there may be some synergies between the television network and Pacific Grove which could help to promote their brand, it may also take away needed focus from their core business and lead to a poorer performance and erosion of its competitive position in the market.Pacific Groveââ¬â¢s lack of experience and knowledge about producing a television show add to the level of risk of the project. If they were confident that the investment will work the only viable option to raise capital while not increasing debt would be to sell shares in the company. This may not please current shareholders as they would face dilution in both the value of their shares and their percentage of ownership in the company. Exhibit 2: 3. Should the company issue new common stock to the external investment group? No, I donââ¬â¢t think they should issue the stock. If they decide to issue shares they will lose some percentage of their company control. In fact, Peterson and the Founders will go from controlling a total of 32% of the company to only 23. 8% meaning that the investment group would actually have more control of the company than the founders at 25. 6%. (See exhibit3) Although the share price will only drop slightly to $31. 30, the dilution of shares and drop in stock price may displease current shareholders. The market may respond by the further selling off of existing shares dropping the stock price more and further hurting the companyââ¬â¢s financial status. Another problem with issuing the common stock is that although it will provide access to capital which they can use to pay off interest bearing debt If the bank requires the company to lowers its debt levels within the next year and no other banks are willing to lend, then issuing the common stock may be seem like the only viable option to quickly meet the bankââ¬â¢s lending requirements.I would argue, however, that acquiring High Country Seasoning company would be a better choice as it will also resolve the debt issues while also providing other synergies and not lowering the stock price of the company. Exhibit 3: 4. Should Pacific Group Spice acquire High Country Seasonings? Yes. Acquiring High Country Seasoning would help to do several things. First because of the companyââ¬â¢s better financial debt structure will improve Pacific Spice Groups overall debt structure upon merging. The deal would not require the issuance of debt and would not lower the companyââ¬â¢s current stock price. The two companies also operate in the same business line. This should help them to become a stronger player in the market by capturing more market share in the industry. There should be some cost savings because of economies of scales and the ability to leverage both companiesââ¬â¢ assets. The only question remaining is whether the purchase price is greater than the estimated value of the company. E xhibit 4: Exhibit 5:
